Celebrate Refugees

Celebrate RefugeesIn 1939, Lutherans all across the United States banded together to reach out to assist Lutheran refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. Creating Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) to organize their efforts, they welcomed these new Americans and walked with them as they began their new lives in the United States.

Seventy five years later, LIRS has directly resettled over 500,000 migrants and refugees in the U.S., extending the love and hospitality of this great nation.

I am writing to invite you to celebrate the 75th anniversary of LIRS here in Houston on Saturday, June 21 and in your communities on Sunday, June 22.

Houston is home to 70,000 refugees from 78 different countries! Houston’s diversity, booming economy, and culture are in part a result of refugees who have brought new flavors and zest from their home countries.

Let’s celebrate refugees’ unrelenting perseverance and positivity on Saturday, June 21 at the Raindrop Foundation Turkish Home from 3-7 pm. Bring the whole family to this free, fun and education event, which includes cultural entertainment, children’s activities, and educational exhibits.
