Grace Lutheran Church is having its first ever choir concert on Sunday, September 22 at 7pm. Located at 2515 Waugh Dr., in Montrose, Grace truly embraces the idea that all are equally wonderful parts of the Body of Christ. As a Reconciling in Christ Lutheran Church, Grace welcomes everyone regardless of gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity and joyfully follows God’s call to love one another without judgment, without fear, and without discrimination. That means on any given Sunday you may see a person in cut-off jeans and grimy T-shirt sharing a pew with a person in a big church hat or suit and tie. All are welcome!
And that diversity extends to the choir, where the welcome is equally as inclusive. When music minister Jonathan Craft began just a year ago, he faced a unique challenge: the choir had 4-6 people, not all of whom could read music or carry a tune. To further complicate things, the membership was blessed with an abundance of tenors, but almost no sopranos or altos (and no basses who could read music!).
With love and dedication, Jonathan set about making this wonderfully non-standard choir the best it could be. He recalls, “While I dreamed of having full SATB sections, that just wasn’t possible; it worked much better early on when I thought of it more like a Glee Club!” As the choir slowly began to develop, excitement built and more congregants joined in. Jonathan wrote choir arrangements for whatever personnel he had at the time and was happy to take requests from the congregation. Given the diversity of the community, this sometimes resulted in the unexpected (and hilarious!) as when the choir sang a number from “Sister Act” featuring local drag celebrity Ms. Tanya Hyde…for whom the congregation made a joyful noise indeed! Other non-traditional choir anthems including Seasons of Love from “Rent”, Day By Day from “Godspell,” You’ve Got a Friend in Jesus (adapted from “Toy Story”) and gospel tunes by Bill and Gloria Gaither have been enthusiastically received by the congregation at Grace.
Now, after one short year, the Grace choir has nearly tripled in size and is thrilled to be giving its first ever choir concert! Entitled Encore!, the program is as beautifully diverse as the church itself and will feature the choir’s “greatest hits” from the past year. With everything from Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing to My God from “Sister Act” (this one is not to be missed!), there’s definitely something for everyone.
Please join us for an unforgettable evening as we sing God’s praises to celebrate what God is doing in and through us. The concert is free and will be followed by a reception. There will be a free will offering to support the growth of Grace’s music program.
YOU are welcome here…we’d love to have you see and feel what Grace is all about!
