Cultural Immersions – A Priority for Christian Leaders

Emory University nurses working in JamaicaThe diversity in our world and the opportunity for mission speaks for itself – all Christian leaders need to invest time in cultural immersions.  This is not just a bold statement, it is the truth.

Just ask the youth who worked together this summer for the first time on a 3-week Camp Hope project in Houston.  It was a Holy thing to coach leaders from Principe de la Paz and Kinsmen Lutheran Churches as they started in February with the big idea of doing Camp Hope together and, by the end of July, actually succeeded in an experience that was far more than they imagined.

Listen to Amy Gulliksen describe being stirred and called to stir others through her immersion into the ELCA World Hunger Gathering.  That experience has motivated her to be the team leader for LEAD’s Hunger Journey in April.  As she says, “It’s not just about ending hunger.  It’s about creating a world that fulfills God’s promise, where none are outcast and no one is a stranger.  And by our faith, we are assured that this day will come.”

Or follow the group on the Peru Pilgrimage on twitter (#LEAD Peru) or Facebook through their journey of faith and cultural immersion.  We are hiking the ancient Incan Trail in the Sacred Valley of Machu Picchu for the first time.  Maybe you or a high school student, young adult, friend or pastor you know will want to join us next summer.

LEAD is so sure that cultural immersions in this country and beyond are key to Christian leadership that we are investing one-fourth of our time and resources in immersion experiences.   Register now for one of these exciting opportunities.  If you are a professional or lay leader in the church, now is the time to sign up for an immersion.  Bring your friends, even those who are not part of a church.  Bring your own youth or young adult children for a shared experience.   LEAD will be unfolding new opportunities for immersion throughout the year.   Check out the options available right now for 2014.  You will find Christ in the faces of friends and strangers – you will know God in new ways.
