By Pastor Don Carlson, Assistant to the Bishop
I encourage you to attend a “Learn Lead” two-day event that we are having at the synod office on February 23rd and March 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day. The event is “Mental Health First Aid” and will be led by Suzette Sova MA, LPC from MHMRA of Houston. Cost for the event will be $80 and lunch will be provided.
As ministry leaders, both rostered and lay, we are often the first people that have opportunity to identify and assist people that are in some stage of emotional and mental distress. Knowing how to recognize symptoms and what aid to supply can be critical to the health of the people we serve. This event will enable you to:
- Be familiar with mental health first aid
- Develop a mental health action plan
- Understand: psychotic disorders, substance use disorder, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders
- Provide crisis aid for events related to such disorders
Attending this event will provide 12 contact hours of continuing education; you can also apply for CEUs. All 12 hours need to be attended.
The event is limited to the first 25 registrants. More information and registration can be found at http://gulfcoastsynod.org/learnlead.html.
